Serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter which is responsible for various functions in our body. It is found in the human brain, more specifically in Gastrointestinal (GI) tract, Central Nervous System and platelets (tiny particle of protoplasm found in vertebrate blood). It is also found in GI tract and Platelets of the animals. Serotonin can also be found in various vegetables and fruits. It is known to be a contributor to good feeling and well being.

Serotonin is derived from tryptophan, an amino acid that occurs in proteins and a precursor of niacin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and responsible for transmitting nerve impulses. A neurotransmitter or molecule is a neurochemical that transmits nerve impulses across a synapse. Molecules help the cells to communicate with each other. Among these molecules serotonin is one molecule or neurotransmitter which is responsible for various body functions.

Functions of Serotonin

Serotonin is popularly known as “happy” hormone. It is now widely believed that serotonin is responsible for mood swings, depression and anxiety. Researchers believe we need the right amount of serotonin in all the different regions of the brain to keep the brain operating well.

Lack of serotonin in the brain can lead to depression and anxiety. The amount of serotonin can be increased by eating more foods rich with vitamins and minerals.

Serotonin levels can be affected by diet. Diet certainly can influence the supply of serotonin. So it is important have a diet which can improve the serotonin percentage in the brain. When you eat the nutritious foods that increase the levels of tryptophan and from the tryptophan, serotonin is made. Not only the diet but the exercise can also increase the levels of serotonin. We all know that regular exercise is an effective treatment of depression. Studies have shown us exercise increases the serotonin levels. However, it is still unclear the exact mechanism by which exercise increases the serotonin.

Serotonin regulates the moods and feeling of well being. It calms and soothes the nervous system and generates feelings of general contentment and satiation. But too much of serotonin can be bad. If the levels of this neurotransmitter are extremely high then it can be toxic and known as serotonin syndrome.
