Treating Depression Effectively

The treatment for depression needs to integrate multiple approaches and techniques, such as: diet, lifestyle changes, exercise, relaxation techniques and counseling. Equally important is family support and understanding.

Here are a few recommendations that will help you cope with depression better:

  • A change in the way of life is the most critical aspect of depression management. Eat a wholesome and nutritious diet, exercise regularly and pursue a hobby. These create a zest for life and dispel gloom and melancholia.
  • Certain foods are called mood foods. They uplift your mood. These alleviate sadness and grief and instill a feeling of well being. Step up the daily intake of: whole wheat, spinach, banana, egg white, nuts and fresh fruits. They keep you feeling happy.
  • One must learn to gain control over one’s emotions and channelize negative thoughts and emotions in to restful and harmonious vibrations. Yoga and meditation are powerful tools to combat depression. Yoga works on the body, mind and soul and suffuses peace and tranquility. It helps balance emotions and helps cope with the stresses of life better. The practice of yoga heals the body and makes one feel alive and happy. Yoga provides a sense of expansion and calms the mind and spirit. Meditation helps focus and attain peace. It teaches one to let go of the past and live in the present.

Along with these, a few sessions of counseling with your therapist, support from family and friends and a strong determination on your part will help you get out of the depressive state.
